My dearest Advent Family,
Perspective. Sometimes I lose sight of it. Like last night. I asked one of my kids to help me in the kitchen right before bedtime. I asked them to hold a Ziploc bag open while I poured the remnants left from the Instant Pot into it. Just as I finished pouring, my kid let go of the Ziploc and the remnants of the dinner spilled out all over the floor…Needless to say, it was a group effort to clean up and my gracious husband had to step end so I go walk away to “cool off” from my frustration and yes, anger, of the situation.
We pray most nights with our kids before they go to bed. I appreciate my husband’s prayer last night as he led our family to seek the Lord’s help to keep things in perspective.
Today’s passage helps me with that from Deuteronomy 4:39 (NLT), “So remember this and keep it firmly in mind: The Lord is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other.”
Deuteronomy helps us to acknowledge a truth about God’s characteristics: He is omnipotent, meaning He is all powerful, and He is sovereign, meaning He is fully in control of all things.
I admit I walk around in my faith journey allowing little ant hills to dictate and even ruin my day. And when I do that, I forsake the perspective that everything I bank my faith on is far greater than these little things. The God of heaven and earth sees my frustrations and anger and calls me to not just walk away to “cool off” but to acknowledge Him and He has my full attention and devotion. Jesus demonstrated His full attention and holy devotion to God, the Father, on His journey to the cross. Jesus asks His disciples and followers to do likewise too: to take up our crosses daily. To completely trust and put our faith in the hands of the one who truly holds our whole life. But take heart my friend, whenever you feel hesitant about wholly trusting in the God of heaven and earth, just lean in more and do not hesitate. Do not be afraid but be strong and courageous instead. The God of heaven and earth orchestrates our lives for our good and always for His glory and honor.
