Wednesday Devotional: Love Is Kind and Not Rude

“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud” – 1 Cor 13:4

During World War II, Corrie ten Boom secretly sheltered Jewish families in her home despite enormous personal risk. She later said that small acts of kindness often carried the greatest spiritual weight because kindness revealed the presence of Christ in moments filled with fear and cruelty. In a world shaped by hatred, kindness became an act of resistance.

Kindness may seem simple, but Scripture treats it as deeply powerful. First Corinthians 13 tells us that love is kind and not rude. Kindness is more than politeness; it is choosing to treat others with dignity even when they do not deserve it. Rudeness, on the other hand, grows from pride. It interrupts, dismisses, criticizes, and elevates self above others.

Our culture often celebrates sarcasm, harsh humor, and blunt honesty without compassion. We excuse rude behavior as personality or authenticity, but biblical love never uses truth as an excuse to wound people. Jesus embodied perfect kindness. He spoke truth clearly, yet people who were broken and rejected felt safe approaching Him. His kindness opened hearts before His correction changed lives.

Kindness requires awareness. It notices when someone feels overlooked. It chooses gentle words instead of sharp reactions. It respects people made in God’s image, even during disagreement. Kindness does not weaken truth; it delivers truth in a way that reflects God’s heart.
Every interaction this week is an opportunity to represent Christ. Speak slower and listen longer. Encourage someone who feels invisible. Choose words that build rather than tear down. Refuse to let frustration shape your tone or attitude. When kindness leads your actions, people experience a glimpse of God’s love through you.

Love is kind because God has been overwhelmingly kind to us.
