Tuesday Devotional: Love Is Patient
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud” – 1 Cor 13:4
In 1914, during Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition, his ship became trapped in ice for months. The crew waited through freezing temperatures, uncertainty, and fear with no clear rescue in sight. Shackleton understood something important: survival required patience. Panic would destroy them faster than the cold ever could. Day after day, they endured by trusting the process and staying steady even when nothing seemed to change.
Patience has always been one of the hardest human virtues because it requires surrendering control. We live in a world built on speed. We expect fast answers, instant growth, quick healing, and immediate results. When people frustrate us, or progress feels slow, impatience quietly takes over our hearts. Yet Scripture tells us that real love moves at a different pace. First Corinthians 13 begins by saying that love is patient because patience reflects the very character of God.
Think about how patient God has been with you. He did not give up when you struggled, doubted, or failed. He did not rush your spiritual growth or abandon you when change took longer than expected. God walks with us through process, not perfection. His patience is not passive; it is an active grace that keeps showing up again and again.
When we love others biblically, we choose to give people room to grow. Patience means refusing to define someone by their worst moment. It means listening longer, forgiving slower offenses, and trusting that God is still working even when transformation feels delayed. Patience is love stretched over time.
This week, slow down enough to reflect on God’s patience toward someone in your life. Maybe it is a family member who tests your limits, a friend who keeps making mistakes, or even yourself as you wrestle with growth. Instead of reacting quickly, pause and respond with grace. Love patiently because God has been endlessly patient with you.
