Rooted in the Good
On my last trip to Key West, our family rode a train trolley through the area. We had a great time seeing most of Key West. One of the buildings we went by was the E.H. Gato Cigar Factory. I made a comment to my wife about why Cuba is known for making the best tobacco for cigars. She responded that it is like both wine and coffee. The soil makes the difference in the taste.
Jesus says this to his disciples, “You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” John 15:3. Then earlier in John 1:1 we read, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.”
Bad soil produces bad grapes, bad coffee, and bad tobacco. In fact, these fruits simply do not survive in certain types of soil. You cannot consume evil and produce good. You cannot spend hours upon hours in video games, movies, social media reels consuming the worst of the world and believe that it will not affect your behavior. We eventually become what we think upon.
Take time to nourish your soul with good things. Take time to think on the things of God by reading the Bible and having discussions on the things of God. The more you focus on this the less you will want to focus on the things of this world that are filled with lust and violence. Be good as your heavenly Father is good. One hour on Sunday is not enough. Each day take time to reflect on the things of God and nourish your soul with good things rather than the things of this world.
