Hi Friends,
Do you ever stop and think about the person who delivered your Amazon package at 11 PM? Or the crew that cut your lawn—and fifteen others—last Thursday? Or the tired young woman who handed you your McDonald’s order this morning?
Many of these are the working poor in our community. Despite the myths, most people we serve are not lazy. They are working—often multiple jobs—and still struggling to get by.
I see it every day. When I open a car trunk at Boca Helping Hands, I see mops, tools, and work gear—evidence of effort and determination. But even $17 an hour isn’t enough to cover housing, food, and healthcare.
That’s where we step in by reaching a hand out in times of need and offering a hand up to a better life. Through workforce development, we help people move into sustainable careers where everything can change.
Jesus told a story about a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers. He returned at noon, and again late in the day, finding more people still waiting, still hoping someone would give them a chance. At the end of the day, he paid them all the same wage.
Those hired first complained. But the landowner replied, “Are you envious because I am generous?”
The truth is, those standing there at the end of the day weren’t lazy, they had simply been overlooked. We serve those who are overlooked at Boca Helping Hands, and we do all we can to get them the skills they need to be noticed for a good job.
That’s what we do. We give people a chance—and in doing so, we reflect the generous heart of God.
Blessing,
Andrew Hagen
