There is a wonderful song that usually is played at Christmas time called Christmas Shoes. The boy wants to buy these shoes for his mom who was going to see Jesus that Christmas Eve night. The boy counted out his pennies and he was short the amount to pay that evening, but he really wanted his mom to look beautiful for Jesus that night. The store owner, moved by compassion for the boy, made up the difference that night and was reminded of what Christmas was all about. Our text today is a reminder of the difference that God made up on our part through his son, Jesus.
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6–8 (ESV)
7 No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him – 8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough. Psalm 49:7-8 (NIV)
I think we forget how much it cost God to save us. Life is precious. Your life is precious and God counts you as precious. How do you see the lives of those around you? Are they an inconvenience for you or a precious treasure that you are willing to do or give whatever it takes to keep them safe?
With Valentine’s Day coming, don’t forget the lives of those around you and what was given by God for them. Take time to treasure those around you and share with them their value to you, and for the one who gave his all for them.
