What if you discovered that you were created for a purpose bigger than yourself? What if your school wasn’t just a place where you go to learn—but a place where God has sent you? Before Jesus went back to heaven, He gave His followers a mission called the Great Commission. He told them to go and make disciples—to help people know Him, follow Him, and experience His love.
That mission is still happening today; and guess what – You are part of it.
Many people think missionaries are only people who travel to faraway countries, but being a missionary simply means being someone who is sent by God to share His love wherever you are.
That means your mission field might be:
Your classroom.
Your lunch table.
Your sports team.
Your neighborhood.
Your online conversations.
Your friendships.
Everywhere you go, God can use you. Jesus said in Matthew 5 that we are the light of the world. Light doesn’t hide. Light shines. A flashlight doesn’t need to be the biggest light in the room to make a difference. Even a small light can help someone find their way.
The same is true for you. You don’t have to know every answer. You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to wait until you’re older. You simply need to let Jesus shine through you. When you include someone who feels left out, you’re showing Jesus’ love. When you forgive someone who hurt you, you’re showing Jesus’ grace. When you pray for a friend, you’re showing Jesus’ compassion. When you tell someone about God’s goodness, you’re sharing His hope.
Remember what we have learned this week: You are God’s Kingdom Builder.
You are building because you are God’s co-worker.
(1 Corinthians 3:9)
You are leading because God can use you at any age.
(1 Timothy 4:12)
You are growing because God is planting His Word in your heart.
(Matthew 13:23)
You are empowered because the Holy Spirit is with you.
(Acts 1:8)
And now you are sent because Jesus has given you a mission.
(Matthew 28:19)
As you return to school, don’t just ask: “How will this year go?” Ask: “God, how do You want to use me this year?” When you walk into your school, you are not walking in alone. You are walking as a child of God. You are walking as a disciple of Jesus. You are walking as a Kingdom Builder.
Parents, today is a powerful reminder that your child is not simply preparing to return to school—they are preparing to be sent. The Church is not only made up of adults who teach, lead, and serve. Children are active members of God’s Church right now. They have voices, gifts, and influence that God can use today. Your child may not realize it yet, but God has already placed them in specific relationships and environments where they can reflect His love.
Pray that they will:
Recognize opportunities to share God’s love.
Have courage when they feel different.
Choose kindness when others choose cruelty.
Stand firm in their faith.
Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
Most importantly, pray that your child sees themselves the way God sees them:
Chosen. Loved. Called. Equipped. Sent.
The prayers you pray over your children today are part of the spiritual foundation they will carry for years to come. The seeds you plant now may become a harvest that impacts their friends, their school, their community, and generations after them.
Kingdom Builder Challenge – Create a “Kingdom Builder Mission Statement” for your school year. Complete this sentence:
“This year, God is sending me to __________ so that I can show His love by __________.”
Example: “This year, God is sending me to my classroom so that I can show His love by including others.”
Place your mission statement somewhere you will see it throughout the school year.
Family Discussion
What does it mean to be “sent” by Jesus?
Where is your mission field this school year?
How can you be a light at school?
Who is someone you can show Jesus’ love to this year?
What is one thing you want God to help you do as a Kingdom Builder?
Dear Jesus,
Thank You for choosing us to be part of Your mission. As we return to school, help us remember that we are sent by You. Give us eyes to see people who need encouragement, hearts that love like You, and courage to share Your truth. Help us be lights in our schools. Help us build Your Kingdom through kindness, compassion, generosity, and faith.
For our parents, thank You for the seeds they plant in our hearts every day. Strengthen them as they guide us, pray for us, and help us grow. May they trust that You are working even when they cannot see it.
Holy Spirit, lead us. Jesus, use us. Father, grow us. May our lives point others to You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Matthew 5:14
